I am an American, 71 years old, retired, and now calling northern Thailand home. I have been married to a gracious, loving woman of hill-tribe ethnicity, for eighteen years. She is 57. We live in a small rice farming community about twenty-five kilometers from where the borders of Thailand, Burma, and Laos come together. There are about 570 people in our village out of which about half a dozen are Westerners.

Before retirement, I worked in an administrative capacity on a number of international programs in Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. I now spend my days doing some volunteer teaching, practicing my poor Thai language skills by playing chess with the village men over a cold beverage, and reading all of the books I never had time for during my working years.
